Moroccan Tea Recipe | Between Tradition and Modernity
In a gleaming copper teapot, mint leaves float like petals in a bath of fragrant steam. The fragrance fills the air, evoking the alleyways of Marrakech, the bustle of the souks, and the warm welcome of Moroccan homes.
But behind this sensory scene, a question arises: should we sweeten Moroccan tea , or respect the original tradition?

At Maison NANA1807 , we celebrate this age-old ritual, aware that Moroccan Mint Tea is much more than a drink: it is a cultural heritage that dates back to the 9th century. At that time, tea was consumed plain, without sugar , to fully appreciate the subtlety of the green leaves and the freshness of the mint.
Little Tradition vs. Great Tradition
The history of sugar in Moroccan tea illustrates the meeting between two worlds:
-
A great Moroccan tradition (9th century) : the tea is brewed with precision, without sugar , to enhance the natural intensity of the green tea and the freshness of the mint. Each action is a ritual: the boiling water, the rinsing of the Gunpowder, the back and forth between the glass and the teapot to harmonize the flavors.
-
A little sweet tradition (since 1925) : with the valorization of sugar by France in its colonies, tea was gradually sweetened, particularly to please Westernized palates. While this version remains popular, it does not reflect the original authenticity of traditional Moroccan tea .
So, the difference is not just taste: it is historical and cultural. At Maison NANA1807 , we favor the great tradition , while allowing everyone to adjust the sweet touch according to their taste.
