Tea was so popular in Paris that Madame de Sévigné, who recounted the deeds of the Sun King and his pals in a famous series of gossip letters to her daughter, often found herself mentioning tea. "I saw the Princess of Taranto [written from Sévigné] ... who takes 12 cups of tea every day ... who, she says, cures all her ailments ..."
