A Mint Tea as a sign of Peace and Friendship

In 1840, King Louis-Philippe continued, without any scruples, the colonial conquest of the Algerian coasts started under the reign of Charles X.

Surprised by the unexpected resistance of the local troops led by Emir Abd el-Kader, the siege of the town of Mazagran, near Mostaganem, east of Oran, represents one of the most famous fierce battles of this difficult time.

NCOs and soldiers, Berrichons of origin, of the 1st battalion of light infantry of Africa, under the orders of Captain Lelièvre, are besieged by resistance fighters, commanded by a lieutenant of the Emir Abd el- Kader.

At the end of the battle of several days, the Berrichons emerge victorious.

It was then that the Bey of Mazagran offered the Berrichons the traditional Mint tea, as a sign of peace and friendship … The elixir is then served in a high cup, in the shape of a stemmed glass, without handle, in terracotta.

One of the Mazagran battle veterans shows an example of this tall conical cup to Charles Pillivuyt, from the eponymous porcelain factory in Berry. Seduced by this unusual shape, Charles Pillivuyt then came up with the idea of ​​making porcelain for drinking coffee - which was then the hot drink of choice in France. The coffee cup then takes the name of "Mazagran" to pay tribute to this precious moment in Franco-Algerian culture!

Abandoned in the 1920s, Mazagran resurfaced in 1938, when a Berruyer merchant placed it on the table of the President of the Republic, Albert Lebrun, passing through Bourges. It was the best place to relaunch the broadcast of the mazagran ...
